#20 Completed – I’m hungry so lettuce eat

Growing your own grub is a longitudinal challenge for me in this one.

I must first of all credit my mum because it is her wide knowledge of home-grown veg that enabled me to complete this one. She has grown everything from red peppers to the lemon that she has going on at the moment.

I began thinking about what kind of stuff could I genuinely sew and chew in the period of a couple months. Lettuce is the obvious option. I know this from my mother’s last year experience of harvesting from April to October – pretty much free salad until this point! Awesome!

But, initially, Mum proposed I give radish a go. That sharp little pink snack that my Dad would munch prior to dinner.

Sadly though, despite my optimism in seeing leaves develop from my sewn seeds, progress was not as positive as I’d thought. Mum told me it probably was not worth pursuing such weak developing plants. I was going to resort to eating the seeds if need be but Mum came up with another idea.

Back to the trusty lettuce. With a couple Belgian seedlings chucked into a friendly-looking yellow pot, fed by funky little processed balls and watered to a healthy extent, I was ready to give my zero food miles living another try.

And success was abundant! A beautiful bouquet of varieties had blossomed and was ready for harvesting.

Actually, having given the yellow pot a hair cut I was amazed to establish that actually, there wasn’t as much going on as I had imagined. Ah well, still a healthy dose for one!

Accompanying tortilla español, my home salad satisfied me well, and looks set to produce more and more throughout the coming weeks. If you have a garden, conservatory or narrow window ledge, I urge you give it a go.
