#47 Completed – owed by the oed

I needed to invent my own word. So, after many commutes to work and time spent lying in bed waiting to lose a bit of consciousness, here it is:

to cobo  verb  making the most of the opportunities available in a particular situation.

Where did this word come from?

Over the past 59 days that I have been performing these things I have realised it has involved me doing almost as much as I can. Following the guidance I took from the very beginning of the blog (scroll down, I know it’s a long way but there should be one about inspiration) I was to ‘say yes more’. This means jumping at the stuff that normally you would not bat an eye lid at. A Roman Catholic service in Flemish, for example, doesn’t scream bundles of joy at first thought. But if you don’t have that first thought and just say yes to it, you’ll find yourself in a most intriguing cultural experience.

When searching for a word to satisfy this experience I was at quite a loss. So let’s invent one.

Why to cobo?

Before I was born my family came over from an island called Guernsey, one of the Channel Islands. Naturally, with family there, regular visits were made back to the rock throughout my childhood. This means that, for me, every journey back to this place is a journey through my memory. Pretty cool.

Cobo is a bay and beach on the West coast of the island. I have distinct memories of being a child and exploring the vicinity with my family. There are lots of rocky features that were begging to be discovered. Scrambling from one limpet-loving chunk of rock to the next, it was up to a miniature me to discover whatever route, direction and destination I fancied. Plus it required manipulating your whole body to summit the geology. This freedom to discover is what I wanted to make of this word.

Plus, cobo. Sounds awesome right.

My application for entry into the Oxford English Dictionary will be imminent.
